BUSINESS GOALS & CHALLENGE

The existing space at Wolter Chiropractic & Wellness could no longer support the operation and desired practice growth.

Doctors Todd and Sonja Wolter had been practicing for 14 years, operating a single high-volume location.

The practice faced several constraints:

  • Poor patient flow
  • Limited overall square footage
  • Centrally located plumbing and mechanical that could not be relocated

They described the office image as tired and only partially appealing to the target market. Patient retention was a concern, and the team believed a better environment would support longer patient relationships and reduce dependence on constant new patient acquisition.

Dr. Todd Wolter initially engaged CrossFields to determine whether the existing footprint could be reorganized to resolve these challenges. CrossFields developed and tested multiple planning scenarios, exploring different layout options, circulation patterns, and space allocations.

Each option was evaluated for flow, capacity, and operational performance.

Through this process, CrossFields and the client reached the same conclusion.

No planning solution could overcome the fixed core and limited available square footage without removing key functions or compromising the practice’s goals.

The space could be improved, but the growth issues could not be solved.

A few years later, one half of the second floor above their space became available. The project could then move forward with the physical capacity required to support the practice vision.

The challenge shifted from just trying to make the space work to transforming it into a cohesive, high-performing environment.

SOLUTION

Working with both Dr. Todd and Dr. Sonya Wolter, CrossFields approached the project as a planning and design reorganization, not simply an expansion.

Relocating non-patient functions to the second floor allowed the main level to be rebalanced around the fixed core, establishing a circular flow pattern that improved movement clarity and reduced congestion.

Key Design Strategies Included:

Entry was elevated from a dated pass-through zone to a composed arrival moment, creating a calm, structured first impression that signals professionalism and intention.

  • Updated stair detailing and finishes to add architectural clarity.
  • Introduced a sculptural pendant to establish visual focus and spatial balance.
  • Used natural light and flooring transitions to guide movement into the space.

Front Desk was redesigned as an open, welcoming reception point.

  • Removed enclosed transaction windows to eliminate barriers and improve flow, visibility, access, and patient connection.
  • Applied clean geometry and refined detailing to establish organization and hierarchy.
  • Integrated technology to support efficiency without visual clutter.
  • Positioned the desk and branding as both a functional anchor and visual focal point.

Waiting Reception was reimagined as a restorative pause point rather than a holding area.

  • Softened and re-scaled seating to encourage comfort and approachability.
  • Introduced a layered palette of warm neutrals and controlled blues.
  • Used a custom patterned carpet as a grounding design element.
  • Anchored the space with a central upholstered ottoman for balance and focus.
  • Curated abstract artwork for tone rather than decoration.
  • Added flexible accent seating to support adaptability without clutter.

Adjusting Area redesign reinforced a calm, organized, and professional treatment environment.

    • Reorganized table placement to improve circulation and spatial rhythm.
    • Improved privacy and visual order while maintaining efficiency.
    • Simplified and aligned educational graphics for clarity and consistency.
    • Integrated millwork and technology to support workflow and cleanliness.
    • Applied soft neutrals and wood tones to balance warmth with clinical precision.

The completed project delivers a cohesive, organized, and visually consistent healing environment.

The practice now supports clear circulation, improved patient experience, and a professional image aligned with the quality of care being delivered. Each space functions as part of one integrated system, allowing the practice to operate with greater clarity, efficiency, and confidence.
