Project Overview

The Wellness Room is a wellness-focused chiropractic practice located in McKinney, Texas. CrossFields partnered with Dr. Joey Pinney during the early planning stages of the practice to help define the spatial requirements, patient experience, operational flow, and long-term vision before selecting a location. The result is a modern wellness environment that integrates chiropractic care with restorative therapies within a cohesive, elevated patient experience.

CrossFields specializes in designing healthcare practices that improve patient experience, streamline operations, and support long-term practice growth.

BUSINESS GOALS & CHALLENGE

Dr. Joey Pinney came to CrossFields during the early stages of launching a new wellness-focused chiropractic practice in McKinney. While he was already practicing chiropractic care in a small office within his father’s dental practice, he knew his long-term vision required something entirely different — both operationally and experientially.

Rather than creating a traditional chiropractic clinic, Dr. Pinney envisioned a modern wellness environment that blended chiropractic care with recovery-focused amenities such as cold plunge therapy, sauna rooms, massage therapy, and future expansion for additional providers and services. His goal was to create a space that felt restorative, elevated, and highly intentional from the moment patients entered.

Dr. Pinney’s primary goals were to:

  • Create a calming, elevated environment that felt more like a wellness retreat than a clinical office
  • Seamlessly integrate spa and chiropractic functions without either feeling secondary
  • Establish a distinctive brand presence in the McKinney market
  • Ensure intuitive patient flow and operational efficiency

The primary challenge was balancing two different practice types — hands-on chiropractic treatment and restorative spa therapies — within one cohesive footprint. The space needed to feel unified while clearly organizing each experience. Additionally, every architectural and infrastructure decision needed to support both immediate operational goals and future growth plans before committing to a location.

SOLUTION

STEP 01 – DISCOVER | What Did He Need?

At the time Dr. Pinney engaged CrossFields, he had not yet finalized a location or determined the appropriate square footage needed to support both his immediate goals and long-term growth plans. One of the primary objectives of the early planning process was defining the operational requirements, patient flow, service integration, and future scalability needed before committing to real estate decisions.

Through the strategic planning process, CrossFields helped establish the spatial requirements and overall vision that ultimately guided the selection of a 2,734 square foot gray shell space in McKinney, Texas.

This project encompassed full interior architecture and design services, including space planning, interior finishes, material selections, lighting design, millwork concepts, patient areas, recovery spaces, and core support areas. As a gray box build-out, the project required designing the layout and patient journey from a raw shell condition.

STEP 02 – EXPLORE | The Best Floor Plan & Beyond

Our main objective at CrossFields was to create a space that delivered a strong first impression, supported operational flow, and felt warm, restorative, and elevated while subtly reflecting its Texas location.

CrossFields began by organizing the 2,734 SF suite around a clear, intuitive circulation plan. A circular layout separates yet connects the two core offerings — chiropractic care on one side and spa amenities, including sauna and cold plunge rooms on the other, with an open recovery room positioned at the back to unify the experience.

A centralized core houses the bathrooms, IST room, and red light therapy room, streamlining plumbing and mechanical coordination while creating an efficient operational anchor for the practice.

Inspired by Healing Scandinavian design principles and the desire to create a calming, modern retreat, CrossFields developed a soft neutral palette layered with natural textures. Lighter wood tones bring warmth and simplicity, while darker wood flooring and exposed beams ground the space and subtly tie into the Texas vernacular.

Key Design Goals

  • Create a wellness-focused patient experience that feels restorative rather than clinical
  • Integrate chiropractic care and spa therapies into one cohesive operational model
  • Establish intuitive circulation and efficient patient flow throughout the practice
  • Support future growth and expanded services without compromising the patient experience

Design Highlights

  • Circular floor plan that separates yet connects chiropractic and wellness zones
  • Scandinavian-inspired light wood millwork layered with soft neutral finishes
  • Dark wood LVP flooring and exposed beam elements that add warmth and regional character
  • Private sauna and cold plunge suites integrated into the overall patient journey
  • Open recovery room designed for post-treatment relaxation and continuity of experience
  • Centralized IST and red light therapy rooms for improved infrastructure and operational efficiency

Project Outcome

The Wellness Room successfully blends chiropractic care with restorative wellness therapies within a cohesive and highly intentional environment. The layout supports efficient operations while creating a calm, elevated patient experience that feels modern, restorative, and distinctive within the McKinney market. By beginning with strategic planning before selecting real estate, the project was able to align operational goals, patient flow, and long-term growth needs from the very beginning.
